What is Antenatal Yoga?
Antenatal Yoga is
yoga which has been specially adapted for the needs of pregnant women, being gentle, non-strenuous and absolutely safe.
Antenatal yoga classes teach exercises, relaxation and breathing techniques to help you cope with pregnancy, childbirth and life with your new baby. Previous experience of yoga is not necessary.
Benefits of Antenatal Yoga
There are many benefits from practising antenatal yoga. There are said to be advantages during pregnancy, such as;
- better relaxation and circulation
- improved posture which will improve the way you carry your baby.
There are also advantages during labour
- encourages your baby to be positioned optimally for easy delivery
- postural awareness will help you find good positions in labour
One of the first things you learn in a yoga class is how to breathe fully.
Learning how to do yoga breathing techniques primes you for labour and childbirth, because it trains you to stay calm when you need it most.
Precautions with Antenatal Yoga
Mothers-to-be should pay attention not to overstretch the body - the ligaments around the joints become loose and soft during pregnancy. The abdomen should stay relaxed at all times. Starting yoga is no different to starting any other form of exercise - the same advice applies. If you are not used to regular exercise then you should start slowly. Any position which feels uncomfortable should be left out, and if in any doubt consult your doctor or midwife.
