What is Antenatal Exercise?

Antenatal exercise classes are specifically tailored to be safe in all stages of pregnancy. Antenatal exercise classes allow pregnant women to stay fit and healthy in an environment that is safe for both mum and baby.

By exercising and taking care of your body, and your unborn baby, you’ll also find yourself easting healthier diet, and will generally have a far more positive outlook on life. Being fit is also very good preparation for the exertion required in labour. Important exercises include the ones that help to tone up your muscles and improve the suppleness of your joints, making your pregnancy more comfortable and relieving problems like backache.

How often should I exercise during pregnancy?

On a very general basis it is suggested that an antenatal exercise program should be limited to three or four times a week and kept to a regular pattern of short sessions rather than over-ambitious one-off efforts.

Precautions with Antenatal Exercise

During pregnancy overheating through exercise, saunas or hot tubs should be avoided. It is not wise to start a new, intensive exercise programme, but gentle exercise can be built up. Women's joints become looser during pregnancy in preparation for childbirth so jerky or violent impacts should be avoided in favour of gentler exercise such as walking, swimming or special "aquanatal" classes (exercises done in the water) which are often available. Other option include Antenatal Yoga and Antenatal Pilates.
