What is Astanga Yoga?
Astanga Yoga involves the constant flow of movement and uses an intense, dynamic breathing technique typifying this 'aerobic' form of yoga. The postures are linked together in an unbroken set combination. Classes are fast, challenging, and, in some cases, can be extremely competitive.
Astanga yoga is usually recommended to those with some former experience with yoga. Although there are beginners' courses, familiarising oneself with the basic postures before signing up would be greatly beneficial (not having to work out which foot goes where makes it a lot easier to keep up).
The various levels of astanga yoga align and detoxify the body, work on the nervous system and maximise tone, flexibility and strength.
The Astanga Yoga style of yoga is hugely popular with men and is ideal for the male physique as it capitalises on strength. It's therefore best avoided if you have any physical restrictions, such as back problems.
